16th Annual White Squirrel Fetival, May 24-26

Brevard, NC is a nationally certified Main Street community nestled in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has become a shopping destination because of the many unique shops and restaurants located downtown. In addition to the fabulous shops and restaurants, Brevard hosts the WHITE SQUIRREL FESTIVAL, an annual celebration of the locally famous furry critter, with a whole lot of fun for humans, too! This family festival, held three days over Memorial Day weekend, attracts more than 35,000 visitors each year and features local handmade arts and crafts, live music, Memorial Day parade, food trucks, craft beer, kids’ activities and rides.

WHITE SQUIRREL FESTIVAL is a quirky festival that begins on Friday night with a lineup of locally and nationally known musicians, food trucks and beer. If you’re an early runner, check out the White Squirrel 5K Run, which takes off on West Main at 8:00am on Saturday. In celebration of Memorial Day weekend, Saturday continues with a Memorial Parade and Wreath Ceremony organized by the American Legion and VFW. The parade honors service men and women, and rolls through town at 9:00 am, followed by the Presentation of the Wreath ceremony at the courthouse.

Also on Saturday, in addition to music, food, and great craft beer, the streets will be lined with vendors offering arts and hand-made crafts, kids’ rides and activities, the White Squirrel Photo Contest winners display photos, and the Transylvania Farmers Market! This year, we will host a special Fair-Trade Village area, which will feature handmade products from all over the world.

The headliner band this year will be Sister Sparrow, which will perform on Saturday night. Also playing over the weekend will be Traverse Brothers, Dirty Birds, The Po Ramblin’ Boys, Lovers Leap, Unspoken Tradition and Zoe & Cloyd, Clint Roberts, Chatham Rabbits, Fireside Collective, and Jamie Laval. The festival, including the concerts, are free and open to the public.

Double Take Exhibit Kicks Off the 2019 Gallery Walk Season

Double Take Exhibit Kicks Off the 2019 Gallery Walk Season

Hollingsworth Gallery Welcomes Artists for Over Fourteen Years

(Brevard, NC) The Hollingsworth Gallery will host the exhibit Double Take through April 30 and for the first gallery walk of the season on Friday, April 26. The exhibit features work by photographers and painters and tell stories of similarities – whether in subject, color, or material.  Each work is paired with a work of a similar nature or place or may even showcase a “duplicate” within the frame.  The exhibit also celebrates April 20 – National Look Alike Day.

The gallery is housed in the hallway space between Main Street Ltd. and Quotations Coffee Café in the Hollingsworth Building on Main Street.  The building opened in October 2003 with a retail store and coffee shop.  Soon after the gallery was launched to showcase primarily emerging local artists.

Ann Hollingsworth is the proprietor and gives credit for the idea of a gallery to her friend, Jinks Ramsey.  “We were at an open house for the building when Jinx said that the hallway area would be a great space to display art.  Jinx was an Executive Director of the Arts Council and I thought it was a great idea.”  Hollingsworth proceeded to research and invest in an art hanging system to allow for a professional display of diverse art.  She says, “there was a lot of wall re-painting until we figured out what worked best for adhering pricing and artist information.”

This month begins the 14th season of the gallery walks in downtown Brevard.  Hollingsworth was on the founding committee and has hosted exhibits monthly since its inception.  She is delighted that the gallery has supported so many artists; several who have had a first exhibit there and then gone on to additional success in the art field.

As for the gallery walks – she says, “it’s a wonderful event with businesses and the artists coming together as a way to promote our local community and tourism”.

The artists participating in Double Take are:  Donna Allstaedt (painting), Rick Sandford (photography), Bruce Siulinski (photography), Mark V’Soske (photography), Amanda Blake Willett (painting), Joshua Leland Yurges (painting/sculpture).

The exhibit is organized by Joan VanOrman Focused Marketing, providing marketing support for photographers and creative businesses.  For more information visit www.joanvanorman.com.

The Hollingsworth Gallery showcases local and emerging artists.  The gallery is located at 147 E. Main St.

Shop Late Shop Local This Christmas

christmas gift shopping in north carolina

Most of the retail shops in downtown Brevard are making it more convenient for us to shop local, by extending their hours and staying open late until 8pm on Friday and Saturday during the month of December, some will be open late many weekday nights as well.

These downtown merchants will also be hosting several fun events like ladies’ night out and men’s night out, plus entertainment and refreshments sprinkled in to the mix!  With so many great restaurants downtown too, there is so much to do and enjoy while you support our small independent businesses.

Share your support for the spots you call your own, whether it’s your toy store, your art gallery, your clothing store, your jewelry shop or even your go-to local restaurant, it makes a big impact.  These businesses help keep your community strong, vibrant, and unique while also providing jobs for your friends, family, and neighbors.

Remember when you shop at our local independent businesses, spending here supports our local schools, parks, roads, firefighters, and more.  DYK – 68% of each purchase at local independent businesses is recirculated locally, compared to less than 14% of purchases at chain stores.

Please take advantage of this effort by our local merchants; and come out and support the Heart of Brevard’s ‘Shop Late, Shop Local’ campaign.
